Wivey Kitchen

A community food project.

We turn food destined for landfill into nutritious meals for members of our 10 Parishes community who struggle economically or physically to cook for themselves.

How we started

Wivey Kitchen was founded during the pandemic to reach those struggling to access food. The cost of living crisis and reduced social services means our work continues to be essential today.

There are many ways to support our efforts

Donate

Whether it’s once or monthly, all donations help. Surplus food is also welcome.

Volunteer

New volunteers are always welcome. Help prepare or cook, deliver meals, or assist with admin.

Wivey Kitchen has made over 60,000 meals and saved many tons of food from landfill.

Who does Wivey Kitchen help?

These are just a few real stories of individuals Wivey Kitchen serves.

  • Help during recovery

After my recent stay in hospital, I needed rest and recuperation. My husband is a good cook, but with caring for me and other tasks of running the home, it became a bit much. Meals from Wivey Kitchen meant we could easily access balanced, nutritious food during my recovery.

  • Failing eyesight

I was losing my sight, and I’d stopped cooking – living off biscuits and cheese. Someone introduced me to the meals from Wivey Kitchen. Now I get wholesome, properly cooked meals, and I donate money to the charity each week.

  • Healthier alternative

As a pensioner with various ailments, I use ready meals at least four times a week to save time and energy. I used to buy them from supermarkets but much prefer Wivey Kitchen meals, which are more nutritious and healthier because they’re home-cooked with no additives. Carry on the good work!

The need isn’t going away anytime soon

Many factors are contributing to food insecurity today.

  • Lack of social care

  • Fuel price increases

  • Inflation

  • Increases in council tax

  • Reduced council services

  • Low wage growth

  • Reduced benefits

  • Increased housing costs

Volunteers make it all happen

“We can prepare vegetables and other ingredients, help with the washing up, or portion up the food. Whatever we do, the atmosphere is very friendly, and each week is different with a diverse group of volunteers, which is what makes it so enriching.”
